Willow’s Wonderous Knock

Today we’re taking a look back at the highest individual A Grade score in club history, made by club legend and longtime A Grade stalwart, Wayne “Willow” Willis.

This occurred during Round 4 of the 1997/98 season, when Wistow hosted Hahndorf at The Hill in a two-dayer. Winning the toss and putting Hahndorf in to bat, the Echindas bowled Hahndorf out for 139 in 62.4 overs with the Wistow openers safely seeing proceedings through to leave the Echindas at 0/23 at stumps.

Resuming the next Saturday, Willow strode to the crease with the score at 1/29 and immediately set about establishing a match-winning partnership of 116 with surviving opener, Wayne Miels (59).  He had further partnerships of 122 for the 4th wicket with Andrew Muller (35) and 77 for the 5th wicket with Jim Elmslie (31*) before eventually holing out for 228 featuring 29 fours and 12 sixes.

Incredibly, Wayne’s knock was not the highest score of the round as on the very same afternoon, Ben Slack smashed 256 for Mt Barker against Bremer/Callington.

Handorf – 10/139 (62.4 overs)
Paul Heinrich 4/26 (12.4)

Wistow – 5/383 (77 overs)
Willow 228
Wayne Miels 59
