Past Player Profile – Brett “Barrel” Lynn

BRETT “BARREL” LYNN

Our next past player profile, which uses the word “past” loosely, focuses on current Club Vice President, Brett Lynn.

A talented middle-order batsman and more than handy spin bowler, Barrel arrived at Wistow for the 2002/03 season, making an immediate impact in the A Grade in what was probably the best season of his Wistow career as he scored 449 runs and took 20 wickets, culminating in a match-winning performance in the Grand Final where he scored 110 out of Wistow’s 217, featuring 8 fours and 2 sixes and then ran through the Hahndorf middle and lower order to collect outstanding figures of 4/12 from 10.3 overs.

Baz would soon progress into a leadership role at the club, leading the A Grade to Premierships in 2004/05 and 2007/08 as Captain (taking 3/50 from 23.3 overs in the 2004/05 GF and chipping in with a useful 25 in the 2007/08 GF) and would remain a regular in the A Grade from the 2002/03 season until the 2013/14 season, scoring at least 200 runs in every season except for one (in which he only played in 6 games) and winning the A Grade Batting Aggregate on 3 occasions as well as finishing runner up on 4 other occasions.

Since that time, Barrel has filled in for the B and C Grade sides from time to time although with his son Jaxon (a talented youngster in his own right) now reaching the age where he can start to play senior cricket we are looking forward to seeing Barrel and Jaxon playing together on a hopefully semi-regular basis over the next few seasons.

To date, Baz has played a total of 132 games for Wistow (124 in A Grade), scoring 3,414 runs @ 27.53 including 14 half centuries and 2 centuries and he has taken 98 wickets @18.68 including best figures of 5/13 coming in an A Grade game against Strath – the A’s lost on first innings by 2 runs only to roll Strath for 60 in the second innings thanks in large part to Barrel’s 5/13.  Needing to chase 62 for an outright victory with only 12 overs remaining, Barrel again put the team on his back with an unbeaten 45 to see the target chased down in only 8 overs.
