1954 SACA Country Carnival Representatives

Hi all, we’ve stumbled upon this photograph of the 1954 Mt Barker District Cricket Association side for that year’s SA Country Carnival, which appears to have been taken out the back of the old Members’ Pavilion at Adelaide Oval.

Three Wistow players featured in that year’s team – Lloyd Paech (top left), Doug Blight (top, third from left) and Brian Blight (top, second from right, wearing wicketkeeping gloves).

All three are club legends and WCC life members, with Brian becoming a life member in 1965, Doug in 1970 and Lloyd in 1976.

The three were all major contributors to Wistow’s halcyon days in the late 1950s and 1960s when we won 6 ‘A’ Grade Premierships in 9 seasons. Ultimately, Brian & Doug each won 7 ‘A’ Grade Premierships and Lloyd 6.  All three were successful ‘A’ Grade Captains too – Brian was captain for the 1951/52 & 1963/64 Premierships, Doug for the 1958/59 & 1960/61 Premierships and Lloyd for the 1964/65, 1965/66 & 1966/67 Premierships.

Full stats for each of their careers are still a work in progress (noting that Brian debuted for the club as a boy in 1938 and became a regular ‘A’ Grader by 1946 and both Doug & Lloyd were regulars in ‘A’ Grade prior to 1954) but at present we do have almost full (‘A’ Grade) stats from the 1962/63 season onwards which show for the latter part of each of their careers:-
