Today’s past player profile goes in a slightly different direction to other recent ones, as by popular request, we’re taking a look at the relatively brief career of Brett Ferris.
Following his older brother, Matt Ferris “Bueller” into cricket for the Echidnas, “Bobby” commenced in Under 12’s in 1998/99 before making his senior debut during the 2003/04 season.
On the field, Bobby had two talents – considerable skill as a wicketkeeper paired with the ability to talk constant rubbish, therefore making him an ideal Wistow wicketkeeper! He used those skills to his advantage, winning the C Grade Fielding Trophy in each of the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons.
Batting and bowling, however, were not strong points. In 35 games of senior cricket for the Echidnas, Bobby took a solitary wicket and scored a grand total of 128 runs @ 6.74 – he did, however, manage to hit one career 6, which is one more than several current Echidnas can lay claim to. He also took 34 catches (all wicketkeeping) and collected 4 stumpings.
Off the field, Bobby was always a humorous sort, and he fondly recalls an occasion not long after obtaining his driver’s license when he decided to give his then-girlfriend a “tour” of the Hill, only to be soon interrupted by Ken Nettle who had come up to the Hill to investigate why the gate was open – and why there was a seemingly abandoned car in the car park!
