Past Player Profile – Brayden Leckie

BRAYDEN LECKIE

Hot on the heels of the announcement of our latest sponsor, Oleaceae, comes our next past player profile, focusing on none other than “El Presidente” himself, Brayden Leckie.

A dominant opening bowler and without a doubt one of the fastest bowlers to ever turn out for the Echidnas, Leck had an initial brief but dominant stint at the Hill, playing in the A’s for the 2002/03, 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons including the 2002/03 and 2004/05 A Grade Premiership sides.

His best season was his first and Leck made an immediate impact, producing match figures of 12/63 in only his second match which included a remarkable 8/18 in the first innings (including the wicket of a then young Jason Rehn who was plying his trade at Maccy at that time).  Later in the season he would produce match figures of 12/40 against Callington and he ultimately finished the season with a club record 46 wickets at a minuscule average of 8.20.  Incredibly, Leck didn’t lead the association in wickets that season with some bloke from Milang snagging 52!

Leck produced another strong campaign for the 2004/05 season with 37 wkts at 11.78.  Saving his best work for the finals that season, Leck produced a remarkable spell of 11 overs, 6 maidens, 5/7 in the SF and backed it up with figures of 18-6-3-39 in the GF.

After playing elsewhere for a few years, Leck began making semi-regular appearances back at the Hill from about the 2014/15 season as his son, Cooper, began to make his way through the junior grades.  Unfortunately, this later part of Leck’s career is known for the inevitable injuries that usually crop up as soon as he decides to roll the arm over or set off for a quick single.  Of course, he now plays an important role behind the scenes as Club President.

All told, whilst Leck has played just 43 games for Wistow, in that time he has taken a whopping 112 wickets (with all but 6 coming in A Grade) at an average of 11.49 which is comfortably the lowest average amongst any Wistow bowler to take at least 50 career senior wickets.
